「nudes」や「Substrate」シリーズと並んで、デジタル画像の解体が主題となっていますが、このシリーズではそうしたデジタル画像がもっている「構造」への関心が加わっています。シリーズ名のjpegとはデジタル画像の圧縮方式のひとつで、現在、全世界で使用されもっとも標準的なフォーマットの名称です。圧縮率を高めすぎるとブロックノイズが発生し、画面がモザイク状になってしまうという、この画像フォーマットの特性を用いて、画像の構造そのものを視覚化しています。

Along with nudes and Substrate, jpeg focuses on the deconstruction of digital images, but the structure of the images is another element in this series. The title refers to a method compressing for digital images – at present, it is the most common format of this kind in the world. Making use of the format’s special characteristics (compressing an image too much causes block noise, etc.), Ruff gives visual a form to the structure of the images.
