Interieurs

1979—1983
These works were made while Ruff was attending the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He had obtained a large-format camera that used 4 x 5-inch film, and after his teacher, Bernd Becher, gave him an assignment to take a picture of a chair, he became interested in the theme of interiors as living spaces. Ruff’s subjects were familiar environments where his friends, family, and relatives in his hometown lived. Without rearranging the furniture in any way or using any lighting other than what was already there, Ruff literally shot the rooms exactly as they were in order to capture distinctive features of the rooms and the people who lived there.
